Congratulations Sarah! The past 8 years following you & your content have been an informative, inspiring & eye opening experience. It has changed how I percieve past & current circumstance that has lead Americans to the situation that faces them today. Your writing of the human experience and what it has been faced with during a lifetime of abuse by their "elected" government officials and it's institutions has made everyone who follows/ reads your work incredibly grateful for being woken up to the reality that they've been duped . Your voice is very important because the truth no matter how difficult it is to face matters! Thank you for sharing your gift of writing with us. Take care.
Have pre-ordered, and can't wait to read it. Thank you for all your splendid writing, and for everything else you do. As a fellow author and historian, I know how much work this is, especially when your heart is lying right on the page. Be sure to do some vigorous self-care (even if that means lying around and eating bon bons for a few days while watching re-runs of old TV shows!). So grateful for you!!
Thank you very much Elizabeth! I am watching Spanish-dubbed "Beverly Hills 90210" reruns (because they still have the original music!) so I am doing my part
Just preordered… a signed copy of course :) My immediate thoughts on the cover… a “power” grid looming over a sun scorched landscape. <insert obvious metaphors here>. Thanks for your writings and documenting the times we live in. Bless you and your efforts.
Love you & your voice to the moon and back again. You are a ballast during these horrifying storms we’re navigating. Thank you for documenting these wildly shifting times. Brilliant to have your focused, truthful and heartfelt voice narrate from your expertise. Can’t wait for your new book!
Thank you! This is one is less scary than They Knew. It’s a wholesome family road trip. Granted, that road trip goes through the Iran Contra airport in Mena, Arkansas as well as a number of other shady places from They Knew…but, uh, educational family fun!
Now that I’ve heard the extended interview with JYS you’ve touched on a few issues I’ve also been thinking about that I’m not seeing addressed anywhere:
-That the people behind Trump are the greatest menace.
-That neither they nor Trump care at all about votes.
-That none of our institutions have revealed the least concern about this or have shared intentions to combat the coming coup. (Only private citizen Marc Elias has addressed this point.)
I believe Harris will capture the popular and electoral votes needed to win, and that we will barely drag our institutions over the finish line one more time. But we won’t do it again unless we enforce accountability. I don’t know what that will take.
Ordered and set for April. Your Road Trip is much like my wife's and mine. We hugely appreciate your insight and the connection you easily reveal to all of this country in its land, water and people, history and its relevance to our lives. You show so well how the United States is our connective tissue and worth fighting for, now and always. It is truly the spring of hope in dark times like these.
I just pre-ordered from Left Bank and cannot wait! I love your writing so much, Sarah. I’m thinking I’ll go back and reread “The View from Flyover Country.” My instinct is telling me it’s the perfect companion piece to “The Last American Road Trip.”
My birthday is in April so I’ll think of it as a very special birthday present. You could sign it as, “Alexis, this book wouldn’t have been possible without you. Happy birthday!” ;) haha! My brother, Harry, and I are friends with Michael Cunningham. When Michael‘s book, “A Home at the End of the World” came out, Harry told him to sign his copy with that inscription. Michael did and then Harry’s dog ate the book! I can’t tell you how hard we all laughed. I can’t even write this now without laughing. Oh, and the dog was a Chihuahua!
So often when I read anything you’ve written, I think of Obama and “Dreams From My Father.” I read that book long before he was on anybody’s radar. Then he went into politics in a big way, and I felt sad because I was certain a literary voice would be lost to us. Your voice is much deeper than Obama’s was, but he had such promise (such a destructive word). You don’t flinch with your words. You don’t avert your gaze. And all the while you lace your words together in way that is nothing short of sublime. It’s poetry and salt. It’s the magic of lightning bugs and birds that talk, the awe of great funneled twisters and snow. And, yes, swamp rabbits. Obama might have arrived there with age and self reflection but when he reached the crossroad, he took the path that most men take. Ambition trumps the most important gaze of all, the one that can see only on the journey through the interior. Politics got nothing on letting go of ego and pushing the doors of the heart wide open.
I feel like I never thank you enough so I’ll just do it again. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of MY heart.
You graciously signed a copy of Hiding in Plain Sight for my elementary school-aged son’s November birthday, and I am eternally grateful for that. You wrote a lovely inscription that was quite prescient considering the attempted overthrow of our government occurred two months later.
Thanks for blessing us with your writing, your photography, and your insight!
Can't wait! Will preorder it and eagerly await your next book tour. Maybe you'll make it to The Raven Bookstore in Lawrence - or perhaps Rainy Day Books in Fairway, which is a bit closer to home.
Yay, Sarah, for another book! But Amazon? Have you considered NOT using this monopolistic corporate goliath owned by obnoxious billionaire Jeff Bezos? I wish more people would stop supporting this invasive, toxic company.
Unfortunately for the world, and especially Sarah, that's where the majority of books sell these days. I don't want to speak for Sarah, but I assume her publisher would rather sell thousands rather than hundreds. I'd also be willing to bet that they didn't even give her much of a choice, unfortunately. Best thing we can do is support her local shop, Left Bank, as well as be paid subscribers on here.

Ordered a signed copy from Left Bank Books on Friday when I first saw your post on Twitter. Now I just need patience until April next year!
Haha -- me too! And thank you
Oh shit, I didn’t know about this! I wondered just as I hit the order button in Bookshop. Oh well, hopefully a Chicago visit on the epic tour.
I'm in the middle of They Knew and will definitely get a couple of copies of your new one via Left Bank. Very exciting! Rebecca

Sarah: "I Wrote a New Book!"
Me: "I Just Pre-ordered a New Book!"
Also.... Bellingham, WA? Or, Seattle at least?
Ordered. Now, if you could just sign my Kindle? Please?
Haha -- come to a signing if I'm in your area and I'll sign it!
Pre-ordered!!
Thank you!

Wow, thank you! I really appreciate it. Happy to write a personal dedication for you when I sign it!
I’m gushing
Wonderful news! I cannot wait to preorder it.

Thanks! I went to Lawrence last time and may wel, do so again!
Yes, you were there on my birthday - it was a real treat!

That's why I put links to four other places including my local independent bookshop! Folks can make their own decisions
